“Two previously unrelated ideas come together and make something new under the sun”
~ Stephen King
The very first dinner theatre of Delhi is on the lines of the above thought. And this unique idea is named ‘Ghungroo – The Sounds of Yore’
What better than- a cultural evening with good food, great ambience and better half for a companion in a city like Delhi , isn’t it? Thanks to the vibrant and striking invite that popped in my mail-box to witness and experience the very first #DelhiDinnerTheatre . I got to discover a hidden gem in Delhi!
First Impressions
In contrast to the busy and commercial may-hem of the BahadurShah Zafar Marg on which it is located, ‘Ghungroo’ comes across as a whiff of fresh air as it is nestled inside the ‘Delhi Parsi Anjuman’ Complex.
We were received warmly and every aspect of the evening was arranged and executed meticulously to welcome the guests. As a blogger, I had the privilege and access to the colours and effort behind the scenes.
The artists here perform varied genres of dance with diligence and passion. And, this can be felt in the green rooms too!
Theatre Experience
The tastefully decorated hall that was empty on our arrival was soon brimming with Chinese tourists who were there to savour the colours of Indian culture and flavours of Indian cuisine.
The concept is indeed a mélange of culture, history, dance, costume, food and passion. As audience, we were captivated and enticed by the engrossing animated history of Delhi that was screened.
The animation was creatively interspersed with slices of history through a colourful dance-drama. The kids will evidently enjoy and learn the history of ‘Delhi’ . Starting from the first documented ruler of Delhi, Prithwi Raj Chauhan, tracing the journey of Bhakti Movement through Sufism, followed by stylised form of Kathak for the Mughal Courts, Tarana, ending in Bollywood, it showcases the history and spirit of Delhi, through dance.
The cultural evening lasted for 50-60 minutes. Take a glimpse of this extra ordinary narration of the saga of romance with the bygone era, in the video below.
Foodie
The show was followed by a sumptuous spread of Barbeque at ‘Angaaray’ in an open lawn. The tables were tastefully and thoughtfully decorated . However, we had to rush through the dinner as chilly winds started blowing (Spoiler !). But I made sure to have the Hot Shahi Tukda with ladles of Rabri! I do regret not savouring the spread to my satisfaction, as the winds made sure the delicacies on our plates turns cold!
My Thoughts
For a venture that is in its nascent stage in the city, Ghungroo comes across as a surprise and a wonderful idea that is bound to make a family evening -enriched and worthwhile.
I am sure as time progresses, Rudra XP will make this experience more affordable for the school students and families as well and also widen the Barbeque spread. This will in fact enhance the gastronomical experience, making it much more delectable.
Parting Words
Overall, I found ‘Ghungroo-The Songs of Yore’ very innovative and creative as a concept , that is sure to satisfy the Delhiites and tourists’ hunger for an off-beat experience. It caters to both the creative mind and a gastronomical tummy! And if you are a resident of Delhi or planning to visit Delhi, do spare an evening and enjoy this Sounds of Yore called ‘Ghungroo’.
So, have something like this in your city? You are welcome to share about it here, on polkajunction!
Also, do not forget to share your thoughts on this concept as and when you visit Ghungroo 🙂

Cost per head (including dinner) is Rs.3000
I love Kathak and learnt it during my childhood. I would be delighted to see this performance at just 3000. This is a great discovery in Delhi, thanks for the introduction
